I often hear the phrase, “out of sight, out of mind,” when uncovering an item with my organizing clients. There are many people who prefer to have everything in plain sight, they are visual, and if they cannot see the item, they don’t remember that they own it. This is why I frequently recommend clear storage containers when organizing in my clients’ homes and offices.
These storage containers come in materials such as glass, plastic or acrylic. They can be of any size, from a large bin to a small baggie. The important thing is that the container is large enough to store what you need, and that you can see what is inside.
One benefit is that you’ll know how full each container is, and you’ll be able to see when you’re running out of something. Also, it is a time saver when you can see whether an item is in a container without emptying it or rifling through it. Having all clear containers makes your storage space appear more uniform. If you have opaque color bins, it may be harder to match it, if you want to buy more later.
Some areas where clear storage containers work very well are when organizing pantries, clothing, shoes, craft supplies, and office supplies. Always measure the space where you’re storing the container, and take inventory of what you’re storing before you buy. Consider if you prefer stackable containers with lids, open top containers, or something with handles as you choose your storage piece.
