Storage solutions can often be created by repurposing items. During organizing sessions, I always try to first use the things my clients already own to store and organize their belongings. There are many household items and pieces of furniture that can be reused in creative and innovative ways. Here are some ways my organizing clients have repurposed items to create storage in their home:
A tissue box was reused to store recycled plastic grocery bags in a kitchen pantry.

In this photo, my client reused an old bathroom towel rod. He placed it in the garage to hold a skate board.

Another client reused a yard tool sorter, intended for rakes, to store her son’s hockey sticks.

In this photo, my client repurposed an over the door shoe organizer to store her scarves inside her closet door.

These are just some examples of ways the items you already own may be reused to create organized systems in your home. What creative ways have you repurposed household items for storage?
Love the idea of using the towel bar for the long boards… had to pin that for sure! Great to think creatively about how items can be used. I often find we don’t need to buy any organizing supplies at all, right?
Thanks, Seana. Yes, I also often find I don’t need to buy any organizing supplies. Many times something my client already owns can be reused or repurposed for the organizing project.
Love that towel bar idea for the skateboards! I haven’t seen that before.
Thank you, Sarah.
tryed it out, does not work, the trucks get in the way.
The longboards in the photo have reverse kingpin trucks, so those were able to easily hang from the towel rod.
On my desk, I have a small wooden chest which used to hold tiny jars of jam, filled with small office supplies, a coffee mug with a crack in the handle full of writing implements, and a couple of other similar items. All were originally gifts, so they’re not only functional, they make me happy.
Those are all great ways to repurpose items! Coffee mugs holding writing implements on a desk is something many of my organizing clients enjoy, especially if the mug is sentimental.
Great ideas, Nancy! I particularly love the rack organizer converting into the hockey stick holder. It’s a wonderful idea.
Thanks, Sabrina! That rake organizer could be used for storing many other tall thin items in a garage such as fishing rods, lacrosse sticks, or golf clubs.
Always love new ways to use the shoe organizer on the back of the door!
Thanks, Ellen. The back of the door shoe organizer is so versatile!
Great ideas! I’ve used the tissue box before with a client in her pantry and she thought I was a genius :) So many ways to repurpose items for organizing purposes. Thanks for sharing a few!
Thank you! I love reusing tissue boxes for plastic bag storage.
Oh!! i should try the Kleenex box one instead of stuffing them all into one bag and hanging them in my pantry! Too bad i just threw away a box!! Thanks for sharing your link at the #HomeMattersParty !
I’m glad you’re going to try this! Thanks for commenting!
Great tips Nancy! Love the hockey stick idea! I also love to use over the door shoe organizers for many things! I currently have on in my laundry closet and wee call it the junk door!
Thanks Autumn!
Another fan of the towel-bar-turned-skateboard-holder. They are definitely hard to store items.
Thanks, I’m glad you like that idea!
Nancy, by far the shoe organizer for my scarves is a favorite. Everything else I’ve tried leaves folded or scrunch marks on the scarves. Shoe organizers are so versatile. I love to use them!
Thanks, Debbie! I am glad you like the shoe organizer with scarves idea!
Vertical storage to the rescue once more!! Love having another example of using over-the-door shoe organizers. Also great for office supplies, small stuffed animals, dolls, and small garden tools & supplies. Thanks for posting to P.O.B.C.!
Thank you, Olive. Vertial storage using shoe organizers is just wonderful!
