Space Planning When Relocating
When relocating to a new place, the design of each room can greatly effect the functionality and organization of the room. When you move into a new home or apartment, it is helpful to design the layout before you move in and unpack.
Look at your new home as a clean slate and be very specific in what items you choose to bring into it, and how the space should be designed.
Take Measurements
First of all, get measurements of your new place. If you have the dimensions of each room, locations of closets, doorways and windows, you can pre-plan the layout of furniture before you move it. Measure your current furniture to see what will fit in each room, and donate, sell or store furniture pieces that are not right for you in your new space.
Plan the Furniture Layout
Consider the layout of the room and the functions of each room. Decide on visual design choices such as if you’d like your desk facing the window or doorway, if you’d like your bed near a closet or bathroom door, etc.
Choose the Right Storage Tools
When looking at this new space, think about what you will store in each place and if you need to have any extra shelving or furniture in this space. Areas such as kitchens, closets and garages can greatly benefit from extra shelving and organizational tools.
Design a Space You Love
Creating a home that has the look and feel you enjoy, a place where you can easily reach the items you use on a regular basis, and a place to store other belongings is essential in designing a space you love. After all items are unpacked and your place is functional and organized, you can consider decorative options and interior design to further enhance your space.
Great tips! I once helped someone move into a new apartment and she had way more stuff than she could fit – and more than she would ever use, to be honest. And even though I pared down a lot before moving from a house to an apartment, I still found myself with too many books!
Thanks for commenting! Yes, it is quite a challenge fitting everything in, even when you’ve pared down. Planning like this will make it easier.
