By definition, a garage is a place to house a motor vehicle. In many homes, the garage is used to store other items, and there’s no space for a car. Storing a car in the garage will protect it from all weather conditions, theft, and corrosion. By organizing and making space to fit the car in the garage, you will be able to keep your vehicle in better condition.
The goal of this project was to organize to fit a car in the garage. At first, the garage was full of cardboard boxes, bikes, tools, toys, paint cans, car wash supplies and more. The only storage in the garage were 2 long shelves that were installed along the top of the back wall, and a large peg board that was overflowing with cables and tools.

The Garage Organizing Process
Everything was removed from the garage, and sorted in the driveway. Items were sorted into categories such as “home repair,” “sports,” and “gardening”. We went through the sorted piles, determining what to keep, donate, recycle, or move to another part of the home.
Items such as old paint and motor oil were removed and taken to a hazardous waste disposal site. The empty boxes were recycled as well, clearing up a large amount of space. Many other items were donated.
The remaining sorted piles were items the owners would keep and use. It was then decided which items would need to be hung on the walls or placed in bins. We determined the size of the bins based on the sizes of the sorted piles and the shelving installation plan.
Clear plastic storage bins, hooks and shelves were bought and installed. All items were placed in labeled bins or hung on the wall in the appropriate location. Frequently used items were placed lower on the shelves, and rarely used items were placed on upper shelves.
As you can see from the before and after photo, a car can now be parked in this garage. Seeing the transformation, the owners are inspired to install new flooring and repaint to improve the garage’s appearance. The car is now sheltered, and items in the garage can be easily found when needed.
