I often provide time management services to both business and residential clients. My clients are often looking for that magic recipe that will make them more productive. Increasing productivity in your life is an uphill battle. Sometimes, you need to look at the things that are hindering your productivity to know what to stop doing to help you become more productive.
7 Things that Hinder Productivity
Not Making Plans Based on Your Goals & Priorities
When you plan your day, you need to think about your work and life goals. If you find that you’re spending a lot of time doing something that is low a priority in your life, you will not be as productive.
Not Using a Calendar
Calendars are tools that help us plan our lives and make sure we’re getting things done on the right day and time. Whether it is a digital calendar or a paper planner or wall calendar, you should use one to help you stay on track. Trying to remember everything in your head without a written calendar can definitely hinder productivity or cause you to be late or miss important appointments, meetings and events.
Not Saying “No” Enough
Every time you say “yes” to something that is not a high priority to you, you are giving up a period of time that could have been spent being more productive. Whenever you’re asked to do something, think about it and know that a polite “no” is fine if the activity doesn’t align with your goals.
Not Delegating to Others
Trying to do everything on your own can eat up a lot of your time. Sometimes, things will get done faster and better if you delegate it to someone who has more expertise in that area. For example, if you spend hours cleaning your home and doing yard work, hiring a house cleaner and landscaper will give you back hours in your week, making you more productive.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
Sleep is something humans need to function. Not getting enough sleep (7 to 9 hours) or not having a regular sleep schedule can make you feel sluggish, resulting in getting fewer things done. To be more productive, try adjusting your schedule and using alarms to get on a regular sleep schedule.
Not Exercising
Even a little bit of exercise can help with your mood and improve your focus and memory. Not getting enough exercise can make you feel tired, making it harder to get things done. Start small by taking short walks.
Not Meal Planning
Everyone needs to eat, so making a plan for meals in advance or even batch cooking helps you to save time and make sure you’re getting the nutrition you need to stay alert and productive.
As you can see, all of these things hinder productivity, but making small changes in your life can help you to better manage time and reach your goals.
